Policy Development for Responsible Minerals Initiative

Marianna Smirnova, with the Responsible Business Alliance's (RBA) Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI), leads policy and process development, upstream due diligence review, risk management, including grievance mechanism and platform design and implementation, as well as quality and continuous improvement for both the initiative and the audit program. Ms. Smirnova also spearheads gold specific projects, refiner outreach, and cross-recognition efforts with the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), and the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). Marianna has 12 years of experience in human rights and compliance issues in supply chains, including human trafficking, conflict minerals, and raw materials traceability. Her expertise includes leading global collaborative projects, program management, policy analysis, standards and audit tool development, training, capacity-building, and research. Previously she managed raw materials and extractives auditing and advisory services program at UL, including assessments using standards such as Thai Shrimp Sustainable Supply Chains (SSSC), Signet's Responsible Sourcing Protocol, LBMA, RJC and RMI (formerly, CFSI). Marianna holds a Master’s degree in International Public Affairs from the University of Wisconsin. She speaks English, Russian, and conversational Chinese.

Illegal Gold: Where It's Coming From? What are Impacts to Society and Your Supply Chain? What steps can you take to source responsibly. In this session Ms. Smirnova will discuss the responsible sourcing of minerals, including gold, and practical approaches to compliance and due diligence, including RMI's Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP), as well as new resources and tools RMI has developed to help facilitate individual company due diligence activities. The session will also highlight data, indicators, and trends specific to the gold industry.
