Toby Pomeroy, Executive Director | Mercury Free Mining
An award-winning designer-goldsmith for over 50 years, Toby Pomeroy became passionate about responsible gold mining after encountering Earthworks’ “No Dirty Gold” campaign in 2004. Since then, Toby has been dedicated to cultivating industry-wide support for a socially and environmentally responsible gold supply chain and a purpose-driven jewelry industry. He founded Mercury Free Mining (MFM) in 2017, a nonprofit organization committed to the discovery and deployment of mercury-free processes for the health of 20 million artisanal and small-scale gold miners and the environment upon which we all depend.
Partnering with jewelry industry leaders and visionary organizations, Mercury Free Mining is helping forge new connections between the jewelry industry and the millions of artisanal and small-scale gold miners (ASGM), who, for lack of effective alternatives, must use toxic mercury to survive. In collaboration with the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), and the funding support of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), MFM is fostering and implementing safe, efficient, mercury-free gold mining methods, and focusing on establishing a certified mercury-free gold supply chain to match industry demand. With its mission to eradicate the use of mercury in gold mining, MFM stands for the jewelry industry’s interdependence and solidarity with artisanal and small-scale gold miners around the world.
Toby has served as an ARM Board member since 2010.
Our Mission
MFM is excited to share our progress in implementing a unique approach to the reduction and elimination of mercury use in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM). Our innovative process of analyzing processors' capacity to isolate fine gold grains from various ore types, compiling a database, then making this information publicly available, is an industry first. Supported by visionary jewelry organizations and working in partnership with the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), MFM is implementing projects and programs that produce both short and long-term results that will benefit mining communities and participating jewelry companies alike.
